Bromley Women's Aid
Nobody likes to think that they could become a victim of domestic violence,
and when it happens to women and children at home they may feel responsible,
or unwilling to tell people about it. Bromley Women's Aid was formed in 1975
by a group of women who were concerned about the problem of domestic violence,
and the lack of facilities available locally to help women and children who
needed to leave home.
There are now several refuges in the Borough for small families and single
women. Those using the refuges come from a variety of backgrounds and social
classes, but they are united in their desperation and fear for the safety of
themselves and their children. Most of the women have been persistently
abused, both mentally and physically, and have often delayed action in the
vain hope that things would improve. They need time and positive support in
order to make decisions about the future.
The organisation is run on a "self help" basis, with support workers in the
refuge and a daily childrens playgroup. Support is also available to women
living in their own homes and with social and legal problems.
The refuge is open to any woman, married or single, with or without children, at any time. Practical help is available with money problems, schools, legal proceedings, housing, and re-location, as well as the vital emotional support required as women come to terms with their situation. You can contact your local refuge via the Samaritans; Social Services;
Citizens Advice Bureau or the Police, or you can call Bromley Women's Aid on
020 8313 9303.
