Bromley WEA
The Workers Educational Association was founded in 1903, as a new source of
education for adults, and is now Britain's largest voluntary provider of Adult
Education. Organised in local classes across the country the WEA now provides
courses to over 170,000 students, and Bromley has three of the 650 branches in
Petts Wood & Orpington, West Wickham & Beckenham, and Bromley.
The WEA is a voluntary association run by its student members, with no
political or sectarian ties. They run a variety of courses in both day and
evening sessions, which are very much based on feedback from current students
as to which topics they would like to study, anything from Ancient Greece to
the development of the Internet. Generally the students have wanted
"education for its own sake" and have not been concerned with certificates,
qualifications or assessments.
Some courses are for just one term whilst others are for both winter and
spring terms, there is also a programme of summer courses, and one-day
Saturday Schools are also arranged by the branches on a variety of subjects.
So there is something to suit everyone.
In Bromley many of the courses are run at Ripley Arts Centre, or local centres
such as Poverest, Newstead Wood and Kentwood. They also use Church Hall
premises in Bromley, Beckenham and West Wickham. Course fees vary with
concessions available for pensioners, etc., but are not excessive, as the only
criteria on the course is to break even.
To obtain a copy of the WEA course brochure, contact your local library or
send an A5 stamped addressed envelope to the Bromley WEA at 7 Mavelstone
Close, Bromley, BR1 2PJ.
