Bromley Refugee Network
The local refugee network ceased its activities on 31 March 2006 after more than ten years, due to a shortage of core funding. For up to date information on local support organisations, contact Community Links (go to our index page, below).
The Bromley Refugee Network was set up in 1992 to promote the rights and needs
of refugees and asylum seekers living in the borough of Bromley. It aims to encourage refugees
to register with local doctors, to ensure that they have access to proper
health care services, and to co-ordinate social and education services
development for refugees helping them to integrate into their communities.
In the past few years the Bromley area has seen around 200 refugees from
Somalia. Most have been the victims of tribal conflicts, some having lost
property and business assets in the process. There are women whose husbands
have been killed, have disappeared or are in refugee camps. When they arrive
in Bromley they are completely bewildered and still shocked by their
experiences. The climate, landscape and language is totally different here,
these factors, combined with a lack of understanding of the system, lead to
disorientation for the Somali people. For many refugees the various
procedures, restrictions and circumstances in which they find themselves are
continuing forms of dehumanisation.
