National Trust Centre
The National Trust is well known across the country for looking after Stately
Homes when the owners are unable to fund the cost of maintenance and
inheritance tax. The Beckenham and Bromley Centre was formed in 1975 to bring
together local members of the National Trust, to enable them to take part in
recreational and educational activities connected with the work of the Trust.
The Centre holds monthly evening meetings in the Bromley Civic Centre and
monthly afternoon meetings in the Public Halls, Beckenham. A number of coach
outings are organised each year to historic houses, museums and places of
natural beauty. In addition to these day trips, shorter visits are arranged
to places in the London area.
Specialist holidays are a popular feature with members, and in spring and
autumn indoor and outdoor plants are sold at meetings. Members can help with
stewarding at the Kent National Trust centres and events. The National Trust
Volunteers Group enables people over the age of 18 to become involved in
voluntary conservation work, as well as to participate in a wide range of
social activities such as pub evenings, theatre trips, rambles and sporting
events. Volunteers are also able to help with conservation, working under
supervision, on estate management projects in Kent and occasionally further
afield to properties in Norfolk, Wales and Wiltshire. Projects cover all
aspects of estate management and special skills are not needed as work is
carried out under the supervision of a National Trust Warden.
The Beckenham and Bromley National Trust Centre has around 900 members, but
more are welcome. If you are interested and would like further information,
the number to call is 020 8315 1111.
