Motor Neurone Disease Association
Cosmology has become a popular subject due to the efforts of the famous Prof.
Stephen Hawking. His work has been all the more remarkable because of his
incapacity from Motor Neurone Disease, a fatal muscle wasting disease caused
by a defect in the nerves that control movement.
Although the disease was first described 120 years ago, research into the
condition has only recently made any real progress. This identified a gene
thought to be responsible for a rare inherited type of MND that accounts for
about 5-10% of cases. There is also now hope that drugs may become available
to offer some relief from the condition.
The Motor Neurone Disease Association was formed in 1979 to provide support
for those affected by the disease and to fund research into a cure. They
offer advice, information, equipment and support to people with MND and their
families. The MND Association continues to fund and support the research and
development of new treatments.
Local branches provide practical help and emotional support for those with the
disease and the people who care for them.
In Bromley, the West Kent Branch hold monthly meetings at Orpington Hospital to
support their volunteers and fund raising activities.
The Motor Neurone Disease Association operates a helpline that provides free
and confidential information and advice. The number to call is 0345 62 62 62, calls are charged at the local rate.
