Bromley Mencap
Bromley Mencap has been active in Bromley for over 40 years, offering support
and representing the interests of people with learning disabilities and their
families and friends. Mencap represents those interests through close liaison
with the statutory authorities and other groups and organisations, while
promoting generally a clearer understanding and awareness of learning
disability.
Mencap supports over a thousand adults and children in Bromley who have
varying amounts of difficulty in learning and acquiring social skills. All
have something to offer the community and they are encouraged to contribute
through a number of schemes covering holidays and leisure, employment,
advocacy, transport and housing.
Jobmatch is a supported Employment Scheme designed to provide paid
employment to people with learning disabilities. The Jobmatch programme
provides free of charge a specially trained consultant who selects trains
and supports the employee, working alongside them until they are able to
carry out the work on their own.
The Independent Living Project aims to support older people who have been
cared for by someone who has died, by placing people in a supported living
scheme.
The Childminding service is a flexible, tailor-made service where children
are carefully matched with registered childminders who are specifically
trained to care for them. The parents and childminders agree the terms of the
arrangement, which is monitored and supported by the Network. Children
can go straight to the childminders home after school, by school bus if
necessary. Some childminders are also able to extend the arrangement to look
after children during the school holidays.
Bromley Mencap aims to provide a first class service, with childminders who
are committed to the Network and who have the special skills required to look
after children with learning disabilities. Only Bromley borough registered
childminders, who look after children in their own homes, are recruited onto
the Network. Childminders are assessed, trained and supported by a co-
ordinator, and all fees are paid direct by the parents to the childminders.
Are you a Registered Childminder? If so, then your skills are urgently
required.
Other local projects are the Skylark and Gateway social clubs, the Conquest
Swimming Club and the holiday playschemes. Volunteers are always needed to
help with the Mencap projects, supporting people with learning disabilities,
their parents or care-ers.
Bromley Mencap are at 44 Masons Hill Bromley, BR2 9JG. Their helpline
telephone number is: 020 8466 0790.
