Magpie Dance Group

Based in Bromley, Magpie Dance, a group of ten adults with learning disabilities was founded in the mid eighties by Avril Hitman, a freelance dance specialist. The group grew out of weekly dance sessions at the Astley Centre and with the support of Bromley Social Services, Magpie dancers developed dance skills, gained tremendous confidence and have developed to express themselves imaginatively in creative movement and dance. They now undertake both community and performance work at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican Centre and the Royal Festival Hall.

Magpie Dance is a group which enables people with learning disabilities to take a full and integrated part in the artistic life of the community through dance and the performing arts, and undertakes community, education and performance projects with professional dance artists and musicians with many different groups across London. Community classes for people with learning disabilities accompanied by a professional musician cost £2.50 per person to participate, on Wednesdays in Orpington and Thursdays in Bromley. Magpie Dance also offers volunteering opportunities to work alongside company dance sessions for people with learning disabilities. Travel expenses are paid.

Magpie increases public awareness of the achievements and potential of people with learning disabilities and provides positive role models as it links into the community.
