Kent Lupus Group
The Lupus UK charity is a self-help and fund raising group providing a care
link between people with Lupus and the world outside. Lupus is short for
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, a chronic disease which has little outward
signs but can be fatal. It can cause breathing difficulties, nausea, swelling
of the joints, fever and fatigue. S.L.E., or Lupus will sometimes be severe
in its effects, giving way to almost normal health at other times. People
with the disease face a lifetime of illness and uncertainty because of the
unpredictable nature of the condition. There is no known cure at the present
time, although it has links with arthritis and the elimination of stress is
important.
The Kent Lupus Group was formed in 1988 to offer help and support to sufferers
in the form of advice, information and counselling. They distribute
information and organise events to raise funds for research into treatment and
ultimately a cure. They help to raise funds for research into the disease and
how best to treat the illness it causes. Lupus UK and the Kent Group provide
a forum to exchange views, share ideas and provide practical support via
informal discussion groups, including input from relevant professionals.
They meet at venues around the Kent and S.E. London area and also hold
informal coffee mornings as well. If you would like more information about
Lupus UK, their Head Office is in Romford, Essex, telephone: 01708 731251.
Details of local meetings are available from the Kent Group on 01689 876418.
