The Ileostomy Association
Any serious illness will disrupt a person's normal life-style, especially if
it has lasted many years and has led to major surgery, with changes in body
functions. The Ileostomy Association is a mutual aid association formed to
help people who have had ileostomy operations. It is estimated that there are
more than 20,000 people in Great Britain and Ireland who have had such an
operation, and are now leading perfectly normal lives.
Members of the Association come from both patients and medical specialists
dealing with ileostomy cases, and they aim to help anyone who has had, or is
about to have, such major surgery, return to a fully active life as soon as
possible. They help with all aspects of rehabilitation including social
activities, and relationships with their families, friends and employers. The
Association also aims to promote and co-ordinate medical research not only
into ways of improving the quality of life and the development of new medical
equipment, but also into the illnesses which lead to these operations.
Activities include hospital and home visits to give confidence and
encouragement as well as practical help in living and the management of
equipment. There are members meetings; equipment exhibitions; clinics;
lectures; and a quarterly magazine. Advisory services are available on matters such as employment, housing, insurance, pensions, finance, marriage, pregnancy and personal relationships. You can contact the National Ileostomy Association by telephone on 0800 018 4724, or the local group by calling the Hon Secretary on 01689 828269.
