Gambling Support Project
Over 90% of the population now regularly gambles, and for most it remains a
controlled form of entertainment. But for some people it is a way of life,
become dependant on gambling until many of them lose their homes, their
families, friends and possessions, ending up in debt without hope, self esteem
or a useful future if they are not helped.
Gordon House is a unique project offering accommodation, couselling and
advice, information and education, outreach help and support, and a chance for
compulsive gamblers to rebuild their lives. It is the only residential
project in Britain that works exclusively with gamblers providing them with an
environment designed to offer the opportunity to learn to live without the
need to gamble.
Each resident is supported through an individual programme to re-settle them
into a life not affected by gambling, and the group sessions help to underpin
the care offered by both staff and other residents. Being able to share and
have group support from others in the same situation is often what residents
find the most helpful aspect of their stay. And that support continues even
after a resident moves out, they are encouraged to keep in touch, there is an
Outreach and Drop In Centre, and a free-phone number for advice and help.
Voluntary help, financial and practical contributions are welcome, and for
this or for more information about the Gordon House Project contact the Gordon
House Association at 186 Mackenzie Road, Beckenham, Kent, or phone 020 8778
3331.
