Bromley User Group
As many as one person in four will contact their doctor at some time in their
life about a mental health related problem, so a large number of individuals
and families in the Borough are concerned with the provision of mental health
services.
Bromley User Group, or BUG for short, is an informal advice, support and
information service, as well as a pressure group, that aims to improve
voluntary, private and state services for people who are suffering mental
distress. BUG was formed in 1991 and has produced a charter of rights, which
calls for an improved quality of life, access to services and work
opportunities, respite facilities and proper complaints and consultation
procedures for the mentally ill.
BUG menbers are all people who are, or have been, users of voluntary, private
or public mental health services, and therefore have a unique insight into the
provision of local services and related issues. In addition to representing
users views they link up with local health and voluntary agencies, the Health
Service Trust, private hospitals and local support groups. They offer free
membership, a quarterly newsletter and Crisis Card to anyone using any service
for the mentally distressed in Bromley. People who are care-ers,
professionals or supporters are welcome as friends of BUG. Bromley User Group
encourage people from minority groups to use established local support groups
and have appointed a development worker to contact users and service
providers.
