Bromley Racial Equality Council
The Bromley Racial Equality Council is an independent voluntary organisation
established and run by local people from various ethnic and religious
backgrounds. It is concerned with the needs of the community as a whole but
in particular with obtaining a fair deal for the ethnic monority communities
in the Borough.
BREC was set up in 1987 to give free advice and support to individuals and minority groups on immigration, housing, education, welfare rights and racial harassment. They also work with local people to promote a better understanding and a closer association with all communities resident in the Borough, as well as acting as a local reference point for advice about matters of equality. They refer non-racially motivated cases to the appropriate organisation to deal with.
Racial abuse is a crime, and unfortunately there are a variety of racial incidents recorded by the Police, ranging from threatening behaviour
and criminal damage to actual assaults. BREC will advise and assist anyone
who has been a victim of such an incident.
Job Link is a project set up by BREC which is a free service to the unemployed, giving advice and putting people in touch with potential employers, they arrange public meetings on issues of local concern, and they organise social and cultural events.
Bromley Racial Equality Council attend meetings on behalf of ethnic minorities, with local and Government bodies, Health and Housing Associations, etc. If you need help or advice about racial issues the BREC Advice Centre is at 196 High Street, Penge, SE20 7QB. You can telephone them on 020 8776 8838.
