Beckenham Bereavement Support Service

When someone dies, it is their close friends and relatives who find life difficult to bear. These difficulties may be apparent in feelings of anger, guilt and shock. It can be a time of very painful and confusing emotions. Although people react differently, because grief is a personal thing, many find life difficult at this time of bereavement and feel they cannot talk about their loss to those closest to them. What is needed is trained help from people who understand the need for individual support.

There has been a growth of interest recently in bereavement counselling, which recognises that after a death people need an outlet for their grief, and it is important that they should be allowed to grieve in their own way. Beckenham Bereavement Support Service is a local group of trained committed and caring volunteers who have time to listen to people who have lost a friend or relative.

As each person reacts differently to the loss of someone close to them, so their needs will be different, and all the volunteers have been fully trained to respond to the individual requirements of each client. There is no universal pattern to grief, and no universal answer to coping with loss.

The volunteers will give help and support while the clients work through their grief process. This may be done through individual counselling in the client's own home or on "neutral" premises, or a more appropriate referral. The Beckenham Bereavement Support Service will take referrals from the clergy, doctors and social services as well as individuals.

For further information about bereavement support you can telephone them Saturday to Monday on 020 8650 6313.
