Air Training Corps
It's been described as the ultimate youth club and "my ticket to the chances
of a lifetime". Cadets in the local Air Training Corps squadron are flying,
gliding and involved in all kinds of action adventure and sports, meeting
people and having a brilliant time. The Air Training Corps is one of the
largest boys and girls youth organisations in the country, with some 35,000
cadets aged between 13 and 22 years. The Corps is supported by the Royal Air
Force, but you don't have to sign up for an RAF career to get the most out of
the ATC.
As well as normal sports activities, cadets can participate in adventure
training, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, and of course, flying.
Training progress can lead to promotion through to Staff Cadet together with
opportunities to visit Camps abroad, or go to other countries on exchange
visits.
Flying experience can include gliding, passenger flights and the Flying
Scholarship or Pilot Navigator Training, both of which give the option of
career entry to the RAF. You can join the ATC if you are between 13 and 18
years old, male or female. You can start adventure training at 14 and be
gliding at 16. As you gain experience and prove yourself, you can earn the
chance to help organise squadron activities and take on responsibility.
You're never treated like kids, you're always involved, and you get the chance to learn skills you wouldn't get anywhere else. For more information, contact the local Squadron C.O. John Corteen at the Kent Wing on 01622 754188.
