Asthma Support Group
You've probably heard of Asthma even if you don't suffer from the effects of
it yourself. You may not have heard that Asthma is the most common chronic
disease of childhood, affecting about one in seven children, and it kills
around 2000 men, women and children in this country every year. That's why it
is important to understand how to deal with Asthma and reduce the risk of
death from the condition.
Asthma can seriously affect a child's school life not only in terms of the
risk of an acute attack, but also because of the tiredness after night-time
wheezing and coughing. The National Asthma Campaign have introduced the NAC
Puff Club, an information and support group for children with Asthma and their
families. The club is run by volunteers and was set up by parents of children
who suffer with Asthma, so they understand what it is like to care for an
asthmatic child. They offer information, advice and support by means of a
daytime help line and monthly meetings at a local hospital.
The NAC Puff Club has information available on Asthma at school and cortico
steriod treatment, they raise funds to provide nebulisers, school information
packs and to support awareness campaigns. The National Asthma Campaign is
also concerned with the effects of high ozone levels in the atmosphere, which
are known to cause breathing problems for people with Asthma. They support the
use of pollution forecasts to give prior warning to Asthma sufferers. The
monthly NAC Puff Club meetings for parents of children with Asthma are usually
held in Beckenham, for more information call 01342 313108.
